Breaking the Illusion: Not Playing by the Rules
by Chris Pereira
21 May 2012 at 7:07pm

I like to play games in what I imagine is an unusual manner, or at least I thought this to be the case until 1UP members revealed they share some of my habits. One of these things, my propensity for systematically exploring an area before moving on, has reared its head in particularly noticeable fashion as I make my way through Max Payne 3. Playing in this way was clearly something the game's designers accounted for, as evidenced by the collectables scattered throughout, and yet it feels almost as if I'm being punished for deciding to be a completionist.

My process for approaching each area in Max Payne 3 follows the same pattern, only being altered if I'm low on health and out of painkillers (health packs in Max Payne's world). I kill everyone and then proceed to sweep over the entire room, seeking out any hidden spots or areas which do not appear to lead to the next area. As I make my way from one combat area to the next, I'm mindful of my surroundings and am sure to double back to check behind staircases and to see which doors can be opened. I do this all while searching for golden gun components, painkillers, and clues which can be examined. The latter can fill in the backstory but is hardly needed to get the gist of the narrative. I'm able to comfortably do this because there is no ticking clock, even if what Max is doing at any given time suggests there should be, and because enemies come in limited numbers and only in certain areas.

1UP COVER STORY | WEEK OF MAY 21 | WHAT IF?

What If?: Gaming's Alternate Realities 1UP explores what might have happened had video game history gone differently.

People love to look back at the past and ask, "What if things had gone differently?" Navel-gazing at history spans cultures and races. Whether it's author Harry Turtledove making a fortune by contemplating how differently the American Civil War would have gone if someone had time-traveled to give the Confederate Army machine guns, or the manga Konpeki No Kantai in which the Japanese navy beats up America in World War II before teaming up to kill Hitler, second-guessing ourselves seems to be human nature.

Maybe it's the competitive nature of the medium, but video gamers seem especially fond of revisiting the past and wondering about alternate outcomes. As the Three Fates in the image above suggest, games have woven a rich and complex tapestry in their mere half-century of existence -- a tapestry whose design and nature could have changed radically had things turned out differently.

What if Video Games Never Came Home? Cover Story: A chilling glimpse into a world where the arcade still rules supreme.

1

UP's cover story this week revolves around the question, "What if?" In keeping with that theme, we'd like to offer this glimpse into one of many alternate realities of video gaming: A world where video games never came home. A world where the arcade still dominates gaming. How would a site like 1UP be different in such a place? We talk to our mirror universe counterparts about the state of gaming and their thoughts on the medium.

What If Third-Party Development Didn't Exist? Cover Story: How Activision's 1982 win in court changed the industry.

L

et's be honest, when we think about Activision-Blizzard as a company, at least a few of us get a mental image of a dark overlord with hooked fingers looming over a burning landscape. This image is usually accompanied by a deep-voiced demand for sacrificial virgins. Given Activision-Blizzard's status as The Biggest Thing That Has Ever Existed in Gaming, it's easy to forget that prehistoric Activision fought for the right to develop third-party games on the Atari 2600 -- a battle that it eventually won in court.

Activision's victory essentially made it possible for third-party game designers to ply their trade on home game consoles.

Activision's drive for justice wasn't exclusively about being paid its deserved royalties, either. During the 2600 era, Atari had a nasty habit of not crediting its game developers (or even letting developers bring attention to themselves, which convinced Adventure developer Warren Robinett to bury his name in the game, possibly creating the first digital Easter Egg). When Activision won the right to make its own games for the 2600 in 1982, credit was no longer a problem.

What If Square Never Left Nintendo? Cover Story: We look at how the RPG powerhouse would've fared without the PlayStation.

F

or RPG fans of the early 1990s, Square practically had their own branch on the Nintendo family tree. This held especially true on the Super NES, where Square came into its own with Final Fantasy IV and VI, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, and wealth of Japan-only releases that loomed just out of reach for Americans. By the end of 1995, the union seemed solid. Nintendo's long-awaited Nintendo 64 system was on its way, and would be home to Square's next Final Fantasy.

There seemed no reason to worry until the spring of 1996, when those same RPG fans opened game magazines and learned that Final Fantasy VII wouldn't release in the form of a Nintendo 64 cartridge. It was now headed for the Sony PlayStation, as with every other game Square planned to make for the latest generation of consoles. By the end of the year, Square sewed up a publishing agreement with Sony, and their first PlayStation release, the fighter Tobal No. 1, sat on store shelves. It came as quite a surprise to players who'd effectively grown up with RPGs on Nintendo systems.

Final Fantasy VII didn't just amount to a critical PlayStation success; it was also instrumental in establishing the Japanese RPG in North America's mainstream game industry.

What If Steam Hadn't Recovered From Its Shaky Launch? Cover Story: Without Steam in a central role, the last decade of PC gaming would have been remarkably different.

W

hen Steam first appeared in 2002, its success was far from a sure thing. Bugs and network problems outnumbered the available games on Valve's digital distribution platform by a wide margin. Users who disliked having to launch an extra application before playing their games doubted the necessity of the program itself. It took years for Steam's library to grow, for Valve to smooth over the rough spots, and for the public to embrace the concept of digital distribution. Today, Steam is synonymous with PC gaming, putting Valve in a unique position from which they can influence the industry in a number of ways.

What if the initial stumble had resulted in a full-on faceplant? How far would the ripples of that failure have spread? I don't claim to know exactly how things would have played out differently, but a lifetime of regret and PC gaming -- which occasionally go hand in hand -- has sharpened my hindsight enough to make a few educated guesses.

What If Star Wars Had Been a Flop in 1977? Cover Story: How the gaming galaxy would've been different without a few good Jedi.

I

magine that Star Wars had been a flop at the box office. Maybe George Lucas was allowed to release his original edit, or maybe word just never got out. Regardless, while it's not a disaster on par with Heaven's Gate--which brought down a whole studio--it's still pretty bad. It might survive as a cult film, and possibly even merit a reboot, but its influence is gone.

Now imagine the failure of Star Wars as one gigantic shock wave running through the video game industry. Genres, studios, even basics concepts vanish as it goes along. Now you see that, while the industry would (obviously) still exist without Star Wars, it would be very different indeed.

Mario Vs. King Kong Review: Universal Nintendo's Downward Spiral Continues Cover Story: What if Nintendo had lost the King Kong lawsuit? A review from another reality.

I

don't know if you're old enough to remember Donkey Kong, but I am. You don't really hear much about DK these days. He's been all but expunged from the annals of game history, and the tiny handful of arcade cabinets and Coleco carts that weren't destroyed back in the '80s remain a rare commodity traded among truly dedicated game collectors (quietly and in private forums, since eBay and other online auction houses instantly cancel all DK-related transactions at Universal's behest).

I miss DK. Maybe it's just nostalgia talking, but I always felt his games -- regardless of how derivative or illegal the character himself may have been -- demonstrated a lot more creativity than the King Kong games we've seen ever since the lawsuit that outlawed him. Any student of video game history knows the story there, of course: It was one of the landmark events that helped shape the industry's early days. A plucky little Japanese company called Nintendo created a fun platform-climbing game starring a carpenter named Mario as he attempted to rescue his love Pauline from the clutches of an ape called Donkey Kong. Not a very subtle reference, but that's homage for you. Universal Studios didn't share that gee-whiz sentiment, though, and they brought the full freight-train force of the Hollywood legal system to bear on Nintendo, claiming infringement on the King Kong trademark. The tiny game company never stood a chance.

By: Bob Mackey and Marty Sliva May 18, 2012

Community creator Dan Harmon isn't a stranger to video games; he's been public about his love for the medium, so it wasn't surprising to see the first episode of last night's season finale hat trick devote itself completely to old-school gaming references. What would have been a throwaway gag in any other sitcom took over most of "Digital Estate Planning's" 22 minutes, as Jeff, Britta, Pierce, Shirley, Abed, Annie, and Troy found themselves participating in a multiplayer platformer in an attempt to wrest the Hawthorne Wipes fortune from the grasp of a bastard child. This episode overflowed with visual gags devoted to the blocky roots of gaming culture, most of which flew by at a blink-and-you'll-miss-it pace; but, thankfully, your friends at 1UP are here to comb over this chunk of comedy gold to dig out the purest pieces of retro gaming nostalgia. Read on, and be sure to let us know if any references slipped past our intricate knowledge of gaming's past.

"Digital Estate Planning's" title sequence doesn't seem to point to any specific title; it's more of a pastiche of retro games that gave the player a brief preview of all the playable characters and their awesome abilities. Though Gilbert's fake game offers a resolution and color depth the NES could only dream of, the opening credits feel a lot like the intro to the NES version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

By definition these are still regarded as impartial flicks in the event no greater than 50 percent in the financing develops from a big facility. Nonetheless of which 1 / 2 is generally huge amounts of money, and also this applies the fabrication benefit within a completely nfl compared to videos that happen to be expressed by small-time filmmakers using miniscule finances. Additionally, many of these large spending budget pageant motion pictures possess huge Celebrities attached to these people driving them to remarkable towards the contest family court judges and also administration. The fundamental 3 motion picture fests have been invaded because of the Massive Half dozen movie development galleries using significant budget videos masquerading because unbiased motion pictures. This makes it quite difficult for just a movie which had been chance using a dslr camera over a cord price range to be able to contend with Cannes, The greater toronto area plus Sundance. This type of shows have a much improved prospects for earning an honor in the tournament just like Worldfest Dallas or maybe the Austin tx Picture Celebration because they're more interested in promoting flick ability compared to what they are usually catering to the particular The movies picture sector. Decide on ones movie festivals correctly and you will enhance your probability of earning a great award and also getting some sort of supply bargain. The truth is that in which nevertheless I've got were located throughout Oxford since the graduation of the Oxford Picture Celebration, I uncovered that I understood not much about it has the origins or perhaps simply how much do the job ended up being instructed to have the occurrence a hit. Since You are not selected Adviser this current year, I've had the opportunity observe a few of the co-directors attentively operate for 24 hours that will put the case alongside one another. Partaking, even this sort of compact approach, offers fascinated everyone to learn more in what retreats into developing a video festivity. And so, on the eve of the finally 12-monthly Oxford Motion picture Festival, I actually made a focus in co-directors Michelle Emanuel, Molly Fergusson, along with Micah Ginn when they outlined remembrances associated with past picture fests and what they are looking towards later on. The actual Oxford Motion picture Festival started off inside 03 because idea of previous Yoknapataphwa Arts Council director Elaine Abadie. Immediately after joining this Magnolia Motion picture Festival with 2002 in addition to 2009, the woman "realized the amount we required your favorite shows event the following, " stated Ginn. Fergusson extra which on the Magnolia Motion picture competition, "she spotted Neil White-colored [Creative Director associated with Nautilus Creating Business in Oxford]. They will commenced referring to just how an event prefer that could well be terrific in Oxford and also made a decision to get the ball rolling. From there, volunteers begun getting together with along with the preparing for the very first Twelve-monthly Oxford Movie Pageant began. The 1st celebration was a student in July 2002.Inches Through the second season of the pageant, Abadie questioned Ginn, Fergusson in addition to Linda Ann Percy to defend myself against this tasks with co-directors. Different volunteers grew to become affiliated with the particular tests board along with business tasks. In 2005, Percy quit intended for rules school and also a volunteer, Mrs . Emanuel, had taken in excess of the girl responsibilities. Emanuel ended up being around the tests panel called the ticketed presentation space coordinator as soon as the film event occurred at the Hyundai Center. One more important alter took place 2006 as soon as the movie event has been migrated through July for you to September. As outlined by Emanuel, however, that it was quickly discovered that your preparation situations provided by basketball year or so plus the satisfying temperature have been too much. January ended up being considered the best fit pertaining to Oxford, and also the event ended up being migrated. In 2008, the 3 include gelled nicely. Operating "collectively, your co-directors all bring about the guts with the holiday by means of pressuring with regard to (as well as in opposition to) the films which are picked out. We all each have various choices, which provides a beneficial mixture of flicks, " mentioned Ginn. Ginn looks after the particular movie equipment along with projector. Younger crowd places collectively the tv screen marketing places plus the accolades demonstrate pictures. Fergusson states that her certain function is wooly, yet that they thumps out fires, encourages the motion picture event, plus solicits resources from holds. Your lover half-jokingly does respond that she as well "mediates amongst Micah plus Michelle.Inches Emanuel's part is that of access skill, "from confessing distribution, so that you can complementing screenings, for you to informing filmmakers in our judgements, then handling the routes of those who show up at, talks about Emanuel, "and hundreds of various other compact information that will hopefully go unseen but maintain pageant by wholly fallling. In Even so, flick celebration planning can be a year-round employment. "Each home with the competition operates significantly hard all year round, devoid of reimbursement, to take quality folks and also encoding to Oxford every single Feb .. You won't come across more specific, proficient plus exciting persons than the others directors!Inch claimed Anne Pitts, CLE advisor. Emanuel describes the standard time-table. "From Goal via September, My spouse and i in all probability just assume about/work around the video festival about 15 a long time each week. Around May, any time testing season seriously takes over after the distribution due date, Oct in addition to December, any time we've been composing the travel and leisure grants and also verification articles and subsequent sponsorships plus assembly more often, it truly is much more like 30-40 working hours each week. In that case out of 12 via The month of february, it can be about each rising minute, less regarding Three hours every day.In . However the directors won't be able to manage a video competition on your own. "The volunteers are quite important to people, nonetheless during different points during the 12 months. Your testing volunteers help us trim down the particular records, as well as their brutally trustworthy comments makes all the event how it's. The volunteers on the occasion themselves will be invaluable. They are the general public deal with on the festival, in fact it is due to their hospitality of which filmmakers desire to give back each year. Most people pretty much could hardly apply it without. Furthermore, his or her excitement tells united states connected with precisely why we are applying this energy, Inches mentioned Emanuel. The particular attributes web page for this springs flick festivity booklet lists around 85 individuals who get tremendously led to the particular video festival. Additionally, this season they may have an additional Eighty five volunteers to function on the celebration, 20 that served for the assessment panel. A pack involving other volunteers likewise bring about a wide variety of ability. Pitts, this year's manager like the solar cells and the CLE office meeting, stated, "Deciding for subject areas for any picture pageant panels really originates from this filmmakers them selves. Most of us time existing conditions impact filmmakers in addition to what exactly questions they've already, in particular independent filmmakers in addition to localised filmmakers. Once we settle on the themes, we do the investigation to uncover the nearly all dynamic, experienced sound system to the matters. Obtaining panelists together has a lot of time, but the trustworthiness of your picture celebration currently helps it be quite an easy task to influence wedding guest audio system to get to Oxford, Mississippi and savor themselves within the competition. In . R: How will you check out video festival has expanded forever? Also considering last year? Micah: Expansion can be tested in different means in regards to this kind of fest. With regard to shows, we actually indicate much less currently when compared with we all performed in years 1 and also. We understood inside calendar year a couple that in order to offer the films most of us selected the very best viewers and all of our the greatest particular attention, most people wanted a smaller amount motion pictures inside a lower number of locations. Most people journeyed from your a few place festival to the just one locale festivity and in undertaking that contain had your festival increase by way of leaps and bounds. There is communication seeing that we all fought thoroughly get hold of early on. Not surprisingly, be the mother nature with readiness. We now have definitely received improved while using the ages. Molly: [We've] expanded around market in addition to public awareness. We have picked up superior with offer group. We've got obtained top quality motion pictures since the beginning. All of our web property has risen : as a result of Mrs . [Emanuel] plus Melanie [Addington]. Michelle: The actual video competition offers certainly grown. Annually the item turns into a tiny much easier to have the kinds of videos we want to display. And we possess unquestionably produced the trouble get in touch with a lot more proven fests throughout Austin texas, Houston, Liverpool, Fortification Lauderdale, etc. to take their collected human brain, and to do audience faves rather than just juried give victors. R: Precisely what alterations searching for later on of your movie pageant? Micah: Quite possibly ongoing development. I favor how we strategy the event and just how perform issues, on the other hand hope we continue to discover in addition to increase while doing so. We try to get steadiness, however we also push our-self to not let persistence be confused with treading waters. I believe each year this festival has enhanced simply by enormous progress and that is certainly a few things i believe continue to happen. Mrs . as well as Molly do the job not possible to generate to help best "last year" everytime. Molly: Awaiting reading good individuals involved and creating a more stable framework footing .... Michelle: I do think all of our programming can be sturdy and we will continue on the way we now have placed, but it really could well be terrific to usher in extra superstars to go the films they celebrity in over the weekend. To try this, having said that, expenses big money, especially since massive celebs opt to fly first-class, and they hardly ever take a trip by itself.R: Best ram up to now coming from all the particular picture conventions? Micah: The actual Smith Siblings vocal range for Thacker Mountain Stereo in year a person being a kick-off to the fest. It was power. Molly: Calendar year two had been a great deal of entertaining for me personally because we the actual filmmakers through "Blackballed" listed here and so they ended up a whole lot enjoyable. We had fantastic flicks along with filmmakers attend along with the get-togethers were being warm and everyone experienced a possible opportunity to truly study one. Mrs .: They are all with the honors events. Micah in no way provides for us enhance alert with what is actually waiting for you with the awards marriage ceremony, the like one hand Now i am always anxious with what he's going to conduct, even so on the flip side, I recieve to relish that for the first time combined with the entire audience. A great deal of his honors show shorter shows take the website making sure that we can attract new individuals to the particular festivity, nevertheless We have almost certainly observed "It's Mooo-vies!" in relation to 900 moments. R: What exactly are anyone most interested in in this years film festivity? Micah: Assembly your filmmakers. We've a great number of accomplished filmmakers going to this coming year, that is certainly just what exactly definitely makes the flick event a unique platform to relish a motion picture. The opportunity get connected to the actual filmmakers in addition to designers exactly who placed their work with that display, it's really a wonderful opportunity for your filmgoer. Molly: Each of the filmmakers that are going to! Mrs .: Locating a experience using the filmmakers I have been previously e-mailing for the last couple of months. It really is excellent to create innovative good friends, and also catch people that return time and time again. Q: Something I have not inquired that you'd like Lafayette County to understand? Molly:The actual competition would not be the goals and also in which it really is devoid of the men and women of Lafayette District. A food from the neighbors plus the generosity individuals sponsors help to make our own celebration attainable. Every single brand-new volunteer which comes on side is liked. All of us develop your celebration almost every day of the entire year and begin setting up next springs celebration prior to a present-day a single sometimes closes. Without a doubt, we're previously working away at '09. The prosperity of each year is made after the prosperity of the very last therefore we are in the beginning. There are many actions you can take around post-production for making a person's video clips appear to be film, and i am going to talk with you actually about them on this page. However it is important to understand that training video, naturally, will not video. Just like they have created digital camera devices for example pianos plus drums of which appear and so close to their 'good' cousins of which the many skilled headsets can find out the difference in support of one of the most smart participant can seem to be the idea, there's nonetheless a difference. I've another web page which you could discover more in regards to the differences among online video media as well as video, so we won't end up in the actual specifics of how a not one but two methods usually are functionally various.
